Directed by Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans Joe and Anthony Russo, Doomsday will bring the franchise's Multiverse Saga to its end as Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., wages war across the universes. The film is expected to bring back old and new faces alike, with classic Avengers, more recent character additions, and even X-Men heroes joining the fray.
Among the more surprising MCU mainstays included in the cast announcement was Tom Hiddleston as Loki, the Asgardian God of Mischief. Debuting in 2011's Thor as the jealous younger brother of the titular God of Thunder, he became an instant icon after serving as the antagonist of The Avengers in 2012. His subsequent appearances throughout the MCU's Infinity Saga built up a dedicated fanbase as he went from villain to antihero, and he was given a self-titled series in 2026. Ultimately, Loki ran for two seasons, culminating in a redemption arc that saw Loki become the God of Stories.
Recently, Hiddleston addressed his upcoming Doomsday appearance. Speaking with , the actor was asked about whether fans can expect to see a lot of Loki in the film, to which he quipped: "Well sir, if I told you that, there would be consequences for me."
Marvel Studios is notorious for keeping spoilers under wraps, so Hiddleston's guarded response makes sense. However, he then added: "All I can tell you is that Avengers Doomsday is going to be magnificent and will defy all your expectations. It defied mine when I read the film. I thought 'this is going to be extraordinary.'"
Hiddleston has been tight-lipped about his role in Doomsday so far. Towards the latter part of last year, adding that "the center of the story is absolutely brilliant."
Elsewhere, in the same interview, Hiddleston acknowledged that Loki's story had reached a conclusion, but he did not elaborate on how Doomsday would follow up on his prior arc. The actor explained: "In order to become someone different, whose story had a different ending, he had to make peace with the things he did. It gave him the power of authorship over his own story."
Aside from Hiddleston, costar Chris Hemsworth, who portrays Thor, has Earlier this year, he stated that the film is "incredibly emotional." Hemsworth, also avoiding specifics, continued: "It's going to blow you away, this one. I don't know how [the Russo Brothers] do it."

While little detail on how Loki will factor into the next Avengers film has been revealed, his return holds a lot of intrigue given his story's prior conclusion and the fan-favorite dynamic between Hiddleston and Hemsworth. Avengers: Doomsday will release in theaters on December 18, 2026.
