20th Century Studios is reviving the iconic Planet of the Apes franchise under the creative direction of Marvel filmmaker Matt Shakman. Alongside producers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Shakman will helm a completely new chapter, with screenwriter Josh Friedman returning from previous projects.
Unlike previous sequels to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, this reboot aims to craft an original narrative rather than continue the existing storyline. Details about casting and plot remain under wraps.
Originally based on Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel, the franchise debuted in 1968 with Charlton Heston starring as an astronaut encountering a society ruled by intelligent apes. The series expanded with four sequels, animated adaptations, and a live-action TV spinoff before entering a 26-year hiatus.
Tim Burton’s 2001 reboot attempted to modernize the concept but struggled to replicate the original’s critical acclaim despite commercial success. The 2011 reboot by Rupert Wyatt achieved better reception, leading to a resurgence in popularity. Recent entries, including Wes Ball’s 2026 installment Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, have maintained positive audience responses.
With plans to start fresh rather than continue existing arcs, 20th Century Studios is positioning itself to reinvigorate the franchise. The upcoming project promises a bold reimagining of the beloved saga, blending classic elements with contemporary storytelling techniques.
The franchise spans TV series, video games, and comics, reflecting its enduring cultural impact. As fans eagerly await updates, the focus remains on delivering a fresh perspective that honors the legacy while pushing creative boundaries.
