, Stephen Dillane and Luke Thompson lead the cast of a new stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning German film The Lives of Others.
that follows Stasi officer Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe) as he is assigned to spy on a playwright named Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and the actress Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck). Although Wiesler initially just obeyed instructions and didn't question the regime, he eventually became uncomfortable with the oppression. As he continues to keep track of the couple, he becomes sympathetic and ends up switching sides and protecting them instead.
According to , the cast has been confirmed by the project's producer, Sonia Friedman. The play will reimagine the critically acclaimed film set in 1984 East Berlin under the Stasi regime. The production, like the source material, will be a combination of a romance story and a psychological spy thriller.
Friedman says that the original film's director and writer, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, has been very respectful and open-minded about the upcoming stage adaptation of The Lives of Others. She added that he encouraged the creative team to create something new rather than replicate the movie.
She praised how Donnersmarck has supported the play's writer, Robert Icke. He trusted him to create a new version of the story, adapting it for the stage while still maintaining the spirit of The Lives of Others. The production is reportedly going to take advantage of theatrical techniques to explore elements such as surveillance in new ways, with the team pushing beyond what was possible in the film.
Friedman also expressed her gratitude toward Knightley for joining the cast. She stated that the actor was perfect for her role. She revealed that Knightley is also friends with the writer of the play. She added how this would be the first time the actor has been back on stage in London in over a decade.
The last time Knightley performed in a stage play in London was in 2011 for the revival of The Children’s Hour. The production was directed by Ian Rickson and produced by Friedman, with a cast that consisted of Ellen Burstyn, Elisabeth Moss, Carol Kane and Tobias Menzies.
Knightley's co-star Dillane is best known for his portrayal of . Has also starred in Darkest Hour, The Tunnel, and Sherwood. However, his career began on stage. One of his most popular stage performances was The Real Thing in London before it moved to Broadway, earning him a Tony Award.
