At times, Microsoft doesn't know what it has with the brand. Founded in 2001, , and there's a lot more to it than the green color scheme that prevails today. Although much of Xbox's strategy has been to acquire studios and develop new projects, there's a lot of old-school charm in many of its first-party games, especially in juggernaut franchises like Halo.

When you really think about it, the PlayStation brand only preceded Xbox by less than seven years, and they're all trailing behind Nintendo's massive and lengthy legacy. Even so, that hasn't stopped Xbox from dipping into the nostalgia pool every so often, and reminding fans why they liked the brand to begin with.

Speaking of nostalgia, on , fans are discussing the latest Xbox freebie, and you won't need an Xbox Game Pass subscription for this one (via ).

Right now, on Xbox Series X/S, you can grab Xbox logo dynamic backgrounds for free (as well as a gamer pic). Here's the announcement from current CEO Asha Sharma: "Our new logo in dynamic backgrounds, profile backgrounds, and gamer pics."

Although fans seem to really be taking to this promotion, a few have ideas on how Xbox could take things to the next level: "These backgrounds look awesome! It would be amazing if they also added some soothing ambient sounds to the home menu, similar to PlayStation."

Another fan chimed in, doubling down on the request: "I had my friend's PS5 for a while, I can't comment on practicality, but I loved just sitting on the homescreen listening to those sounds and looking at the so much more prominent artwork of the games."

Others really want that functionality to come at some point too: "Same here. It legitimately makes me not want to use my PlayStation, even after I’ve turned it off in settings. I’ve forever associated that sound with the console."

If you have an Xbox Series X/S, you can grab this theme for free right now off the dashboard. If not, maybe you can wait to see if it's available on Project Helix, whenever that comes to fruition. Given the global shortages of hardware components and logistical issues right now, I would be surprised if it did end up making the rumored late 2027 holiday window.

I don't think anyone is keen on joining the next generation, given how expensive everything is right now, especially gaming hardware. But whenever it does happen, fans will be ready to see what Xbox has cooking. It's about time we saw more hardware competition beyond PlayStation and Nintendo.
