Netflix recently found its Reacher replacement, though it traveled a different path to the Prime Video show by breaking a key book-to-show adaptation rule. Reacher is largely considered one of the , even if it does lean more into straight-up action than mystery and intrigue.
Still, Reacher constantly returns with a high level of quality, adapting the original books by Lee Child. These adaptations are mostly faithful, too, showing streamers how book-to-show processes can work. However, one of doesn't need to be shown this. In fact, this show, The Night Agent, is breaking a big book-to-show rule that Reacher is still adhering to.
By the time of , the Netflix show had broken this specific rule for a second time. Unlike all seasons of Reacher thus far, The Night Agent seasons 2 and 3 were not based on a book. The first season was based on a book of the same name, with Netflix simply deciding to carry on the story using its own creative team.
Many book-to-show adaptations are judged primarily on how faithful the story in the latter medium is to the story in the former. With The Night Agent, this rule has been thrown into the wind.
The Night Agent Actually Improved When Going Beyond The Book
What makes this rule break all the more impressive is that The Night Agent managed to improve when going beyond the story of the original book. Rarely is it the case that shows based on books improve when straying away from the source material. Perhaps the most famous example of this is Game of Thrones, of which the last two seasons were constructed using only brief notes from the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin.
With The Night Agent, though, Netflix did not have this problem. The first season of the show, the only one based on a book, was solid. Season 2 was considered a slight step down, at least from an audience perspective, while The Night Agent season 3 was the best of the bunch. From a critical standpoint, The Night Agent season 1 was actually the show's weakest.
Evidently, seasons 2 and 3 had a fairly significant jump in quality. Somehow, despite having no prior material to base the story on, The Night Agent improved. Again, audiences viewed season 2 as slightly weaker, but the Rotten Tomatoes audience scores reinforce this point for seasons 1 and 3. Season 1 received a 78% approval rating by audiences, while season 3 jumped up to 82%.
As it turned out, breaking the #1 book-to-show rule worked out for The Night Agent.
The Night Agent Will Only Continue To Break Book-To-Show Rules
Going forward, this will only continue. Shortly after The Night Agent season 3 was released, it was renewed for a fourth installment. Like the prior two, The Night Agent season 4 will not be based on a book. Instead, Netflix's writing team will take the story of Peter Sutherland in the direction they wish to, which cannot be said for Reacher's production team.

Reacher season 4, releasing in 2026, will be based on another of the many Jack Reacher books titled "Gone Tomorrow." This will mean that the show adheres strictly to the book's story, aside from the necessary changes when adapting something from page to screen.
The Night Agent season 4, though, will continue paving its own path. After some of the teases in season 3, this path could be quite different from what the original book began; Peter Sutherland is likely to have a partner after requesting one in season 3's finale, making season 4 a potential Night Agents story rather than the singular Night Agent.
This was never the intention of the original book, proving just how much Netflix is breaking the main pressing rule of book-to-show adaptations.
