Steam has plenty of new hardware on the way, but a successor to the has proven more elusive so far. Following the reveal of the and release date, however, it's the perfect time for an update on another handheld PC gaming device.
In the past, Valve established that a Steam Deck 2 isn't something the company plans on rushing, arguing that frequent incremental upgrades would be bad for consumers. The fundamental idea behind this schedule hasn't changed, but the latest news goes into a bit more detail on the progress toward the inevitable follow-up.
Speaking to , Valve programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais explained the current status of Steam Deck 2 development, confirming that Valve is "hard at work" on the next iteration. Griffais claims that the more imminent Steam hardware releases will contribute to that process, as "a lot of what [Valve is] doing here will will be learnings that build up to it."
Griffais's statement doesn't provide much in the way of details, but it does suggest that the next Steam Deck is neither close at hand nor unimaginably far away. Once Valve gets through the current slate of hardware releases, the Steam Deck 2 could very well be the next thing on the horizon.
At any rate, a 2026 release doesn't sound like it will be in the cards. For dedicated Steam hardware acolytes, this might come as a relief, since there should already be more than enough to (assuming the Steam Machine and Steam Frame avoid delays). For those exclusively interested in the handheld side of affairs, though, waiting through several hardware launches before Valve turns its primary attention to the Steam Deck 2 could be painful.
Companies like Lenovo and ASUS have delivered some Steam Deck competitors, but the prices may not be for the faint of heart. This month, the MSRP of Lenovo Legion Go products increased dramatically, serving as one of many reminders that the price of components has been skyrocketing recently. These market conditions could also affect the , as Valve might bank on the market normalizing before attempting another handheld device.

For now, there's still the Steam Controller to look forward to, set to launch worldwide on May 4 at a price point of $99. Hopefully, this premium controller pricing isn't a sign of what's to come for the Steam Deck 2.
