A major hero is Marvel's newest Sorcerer Supreme, showcasing just how extreme their powers actually are. In the last decade, the position of Sorcerer Supreme has become far more unstable, with multiple heroes taking the title from Doctor Strange.
From Doctor Voodoo to Clea Strange to Scarlet Witch to Doctor Doom, Doctor Strange has passed the Eye of Agamotto between multiple worthy and unworthy bearers. Now, the newest holder is a mutant - and one of the last that fans would ever have expected. However, is this the X-Men hero that fans actually want to hold this title?
Rogue Is Marvel's New Sorcerer Supreme in Mystic What If...?
This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of . The title is used across comics and TV to explore hypothetical stories, often wildly rewriting the history and lore of iconic heroes like the Avengers and X-Men.
To celebrate the anniversary, Marvel has asked its up-and-coming Stormbreaker artists to create new variant covers exploring major new What If...? possibilities. Luciano Vecchio's contribution is to ask "What If... Rogue Became the Sorcerer Supreme?"
Appearing on select copies of Uncanny X-Men #28, the variant cover shows Rogue wearing the Cloak of Levitation and Eye of Agamotto. Her green and yellow costume is inscribed with mystic sigils, while her hands glow with eldritch enegy. On her leg, the X-Men's logo has been fused with the Triple Moon symbol, associated with female power and witchcraft.
So far, the pitch is only a variant cover, but given Marvel's recent habit of converting popular variant covers into mainstream canon, it may well get its own spin-off story soon. That's particularly likely given recent evolutions of Rogue's powers...
Rogue Could Easily Be Marvel's New Sorcerer Supreme
After All, She Was Already Galactus
Rogue can famously steal the powers and memories of those she touches, however recent comics have taken this to a new level. In the recent Unbreakable X-Men - a tie-in to the Age of Revelation event - Gail Simone and Lucas Werneck depicted and becoming a cosmic god.
The issue explains that as Rogue gets older, her powers will get even more intense, allowing her to channel one of the galaxy's strongest beings. Sadly, Rogue also inherited Galactus' hunger, transforming herself into a gigantic statue to protect the Earth from her appetite, but emerging heroically when the world was menaced by a greater threat.
Recent comics have confirmed that Doctor Strange can crown anyone of his choice Sorcerer Supreme by imbuing them with a portion of his soul. Given that's pretty much exactly what Rogue's powers steal, it makes sense to assume that all she'd need to do to take the title is get ahold of the current holder.
However, while Rogue becoming Sorcerer Supreme is certainly plausible, is she the mutant fans really want in the role?
Rogue Isn't the Mutant Sorcerer Supreme X-Men Fans Want
For years, X-Men fans have argued that Magik, aka Illyana Rasputin, . Already the Sorcerer Supreme of Limbo, Magik is one of X-Men's most popular comic characters, having taken up a major role in the franchise over the last few decades.
She has trained with Doctor Strange in mainstream lore, and 2018 even saw her become Sorcerer Supreme in What If...? Magik from Leah Williams and Filipe Andrade. However, fans have argued there's a lot more the character can do if she receives the title in mainstream lore.
Elsewhere, when Marvel teased a new Sorcerer Supreme in 2026, five of the ten candidates were characters who started out in X-Men comics, including the eventual holder of the title, Scarlet Witch.
While it rarely appears in adaptations, magic has long been a part of X-Men canon, and it's only growing more prevalent. With Storm exploring her magical lineage and , surprising X-Men characters are dabbling with magic, and it would be exciting to see the Sorcerer Supreme more iterwoven with X-Men lore, whether it's Rogue, Magik or some other mutant who holds the title.
Uncanny X-Men #28 is coming May 13 from Marvel Comics.
