While both and are returning to screens soon, the two biggest fantasy franchises of the 2000s will both need to face the same challenge when their next installments arrive. to be even bigger than Game of Thrones, thanks to the family-friendly nature of the source material, and the fact that the Harry Potter books were much bigger bestsellers than George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire saga.

Where Game of Thrones made Martin’s work a global mainstream phenomenon, the Harry Potter books were already some of the most-read novels ever before HBO’s show was announced. Author J. K. Rowling’s unapologetic transphobia has tarnished the reputation of the series, but they remain a colossally popular franchise. Meanwhile, the only fantasy franchise that is arguably as big as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, is also set to return to screens soon with its first live-action feature film since 2003’s Return of the King.

Although won’t arrive until a while after HBO’s Harry Potter show, both are massive reboots that herald the return of the two most influential and financially successful fantasy franchises of the 2000s. That said, both projects also face a massive uphill battle in one major arena. Recasting beloved characters like Aragorn, Snape, Dumbledore, and even Harry Potter himself will be a tough sell for viewers who grew up with familiar versions of these heroes.

While isn’t short on star power, the series isn’t stuffed with A-list names, either. Nick Frost, star of the early Edgar Wright movies Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, plays Hagrid, while Janet McTeer takes on the role of Ms. McGonagall. Screen veteran John Lithgow will play Dumbledore, while Gangs of London’s breakout star Paapa Essiedu plays Snape and The Morning Show’s Bel Powley plays Harry’s aunt Petunia Dursley. The fact that Lithgow is the cast’s biggest name could be good for the show.

For of its famous predecessor, the series will need to feel substantially different from the existing live-action movie adaptations of the books despite adapting the exact same story. Introducing a largely unknown cast is a good contrast with the early movies in the series, which relied on famous British actors like Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Richard Harris, Richard Griffiths, Julie Walters, Jason Isaacs, and Kenneth Branagh.

In contrast, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has both an easier and a harder task ahead of it. On the one hand, the new movie is only recasting Viggo Mortensen’s version of Aragorn, not the entire cast of characters. On the other hand, the fact that stars like Elijah Wood will reprise their roles could make feel jarring. Ultimately, this will come down to whether Dornan can offer a unique take on Aragorn.

As the most prominent human character in the saga, Aragorn is a pivotal figure throughout the original trilogy. Dornan’s screen history proves that he can play heroic leading men, but only time will tell whether the actor borrows from Mortensen’s reserved take on the king of the West or takes the character in a totally new direction, since he is playing a younger version of him. As with the lead actors of HBO’s Harry Potter show, the star of the next The Lord of the Rings movie will have his work cut out escaping the shadow cast by his predecessor.
