Timothy Olyphant's upcoming crime thriller series will change the way you see him thanks to a new role that goes against his typical casting. include bringing a number of memorable TV characters to life across various genres. This includes everything from golfer Clark Ross in Stick, to the synthetic Kirsh on the .
However, Olyphant is best known for his roles as a law enforcement officer, typically playing into the lone gunman trope. This began with his breakout role as Sheriff Seth Bullock in Deadwood before continuing with his acclaimed role as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Graves in Justified. While he's branched out to plenty of different genres, this typecasting has followed his law enforcement roles from to the 2026 miniseries Full Circle.
But all of that is about to change with his upcoming Apple TV crime thriller, . Based on Marissa Stapley's 2026 novel of the same name, Lucky follows a con artist named Lucky, , who is forced on the run after a heist for millions of dollars goes awry. She attempts to escape both the FBI and a crime boss pursing her, all while trying to put some semblance of a life together.
While Taylor-Joy leads the cast, Olyphant joins as John, Lucky's father, who had an important bearing on her upbringing. He raised her to be a criminal, teaching her everything she knows about being a con artist and how to get away without getting caught. It's a far cry from the actor's typical law-abiding characters who bring the bad guys to justice.
Lucky Can Continue Timothy Olyphant's TV Hot Streak
Lucky has a stacked cast beyond Taylor-Joy and Olyphant, including Annette Benning and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in main roles. However, what makes it stand out so much is just how different a role it'll be from how Olyphant is typically cast. It adds layers to the series on a narrative level that wouldn't be there without him. But it's also a reflection of his ongoing TV hot streak, too.
The actor has been involved in numerous projects in recent years that have elevated him to a core status among many popular TV series. This includes reprising his role as , a single-season revival of the original show. His aforementioned role in Stick will also be upped to a series regular when arrives.
Olyphant's role as Kirsh in Alien: Earth has been an impactful one, too, bringing to life a synthetic whose mission differs not just from other characters, but from the company who made him. He'll return in as well, furthering his character's motivations. In addition, he's provided more voice work for projects as of late, including the Terminator in the dub for Terminator Zero and Goldfin in Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
However, the reason his role in Lucky stands out so much is because of how different it is from many of his other roles in crime dramas. While he's no stranger to playing morally gray characters, Olyphant's role as John appears to be skewed more toward the criminal than anything else. This makes it an outlier among his typical casting fare.
Timothy Olyphant Isn't The Only Actor Breaking Type In Lucky
Olyphant's role in Lucky isn't the only time the show is breaking typical casting choices from its lead actors. Taylor-Joy's lead role is quite different from many of her typical feature film characters. While she's used to portraying characters that aren't necessarily good nor evil, such as Furiosa in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, she's also not usually portraying criminals either.

This makes Lucky's journey a very different one for Taylor-Joy, who can show off her acting abilities by bringing a character to life that's very different from her typical fare. It makes the series all the more exciting, since both actors will be showcasing their capability to portray characters that are outside their typical portrayals.
Olyphant's role in Lucky may not be as big as Taylor-Joy's, but his portrayal as a criminal who taught his daughter everything he knows makes this approach all the more compelling. It indicates just how compelling their characters are going to be for audiences, too, once the series premieres Wednesday, July 15 on Apple TV.
