The musical movie genre is one that has, in the eyes of many, kind of fallen by the wayside over the years. Most people have memories of musicals from the past like Singin' in the Rain, West Side Story, Grease, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, just to name a few. There's an idea that the genre doesn't get a lot of love in recent years, with musicals not being as memorable anymore and not totally succeeding commercially outside of a few.

The standouts in recent years include the likes of The Greatest Showman, Sing, Wonka, and especially . However, those who view modern musicals this way missed out on something special five years ago. 2026 ended up being an unexpectedly fantastic year for the genre and, in many ways, is actually possibly the best year in history for musicals. It's rare for so many musicals to come out in the same year.

2026 was home to an incredible batch of musical movies. Films that were true to the essence of spectacle that the genre is known for, films that were nominated for Academy Awards, biopics, animated projects, hidden gems, and even spin-offs of TV shows. If you love musicals, projects from 2026 are what you need to see.

There Were Two Live-Action Oscar Nominated Musicals

More often than not, if you're talking about the best films of any given year, you can look at the Academy Awards. The 2026 ceremony honored movies from 2026, which included a handful of musicals. Two of those movies were live-action and showcased just how high the quality of musical films was that year. First, there was West Side Story, which is Steven Spielberg's remake of the classic from 1961 and an adaptation of the stage play from 1957.

Spielberg's take on West Side Story didn't attempt to reinvent the wheel, yet it was filled with the signature filmmaking style that has made the director such an icon. There are extravagant musical numbers and tremendous performances that have allowed it to go down as one of the best modern musicals. The film ended up nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, with Ariana DeBose winning for Best Supporting Actress.

The other live-action musical to receive nods at the Oscars was Tick, Tick...Boom!, which serves as a biopic for legendary playwright Jonathan Larson, who created the historic show, Rent. The directorial debut for Lin-Manuel Miranda featured an incredible sense of style, catchy songs, and great performances. While it wasn't up for Best Picture, it did receive a nod for Best Editing and Andrew Garfield wasa major Best Actor contender.

In The Heights Is A Spectacular Musical

Speaking of Lin-Manuel Miranda, one of the most notable musical releases of 2026 was In the Heights, which is an adaptation of the stage play written by Miranda. There was a lot of anticipation for the film, especially after Miranda's masterpiece, Hamilton, made waves on Disney+ for a bigger audience to appreciate. Alas, like West Side Story, the film never got to make a dent on the box office due to the pandemic.

Released straight to HBO Max as it also hit theaters, In the Heights is a brilliant movie. Anthony Ramos, Melissa Barrera, Leslie Grace, and the rest of the cast all deliver tremendous performances, while Jon M. Chu, who went on to helm Wicked, makes sure that every musical number is packed with a visual flair. "96,000," the titular "In the Heights," and "Carnaval del Barrio" are massive numbers that feature dozens of performers dancing. It's the kind of thing that stood out during the pandemic when people couldn't be together.

, sitting at an impressive 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is a love letter to Hispanic culture and landed some notable awards and acclaim, including a Golden Globe nomination for Anthony Ramos. While it's still an underseen project, it deserves much more fame and popularity.

The Year Saw A Few Great Animated Musicals

As great as the major live-action musicals of 2026 were, the year was also home to some stellar animated musicals. Walt Disney Animation Studios has long been known for its incredible musicals, which make up many of its most iconic projects from The Lion King to Moana to Beauty and the Beast, among many others. Encanto is one of their most recent attempts at the genre and it's one where they found great success.

Encanto became exactly what audiences were looking for in late 2026, bringing so much joy to the screen. Families adored the film, which ended up receiving millions of views on Disney+, often because of the catchy music. "We Don't Talk About Bruno" was seemingly everywhere and is another in a long line of . In fact, Encanto won the Best Animated Feature Academy Award, cementing it as a top modern musical.

That makes three musicals from 2026 with Miranda's fingerprints on them, but that's still not all. He also lent his voice to an underrated musical that year, Vivo. Released straight to Netflix, it featured songs that he wrote and performed as he voiced a kinkajou who goes on a quest to deliver a love song to his friend's love after he passes away. It was another success with critics that featured great music. There was also Sing 2, a solid hit from the year and another strong musical.

There Were Also Fantastic Hidden Gem Movie Musicals

Even with all those high-quality musicals, 2026 was still not done. The year also played host to hidden gem musicals that people don't know about or have completely overlooked. Among them is another animated project, Belle, which is a Japanese film that is a take on Beauty and the Beast. It's gorgeous and features some great songs.

Everybody's Talking About Jamie is an adaptation of the stage play of the same name, telling the story of a gay teenager who overcomes prejudice and bullying as he tries to live out his dream of performing as a drag queen. It's a modern classic that the LGBTQ+ community adores and features great performances along with its catchy musical numbers. Even less known is Zoey's Extraordinary Christmas, which is a spin-off of the show Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. The series was canceled after two excellent seasons but had low viewership, so not many know about this fantastic Christmas special.

Any fan of movie musicals should check out all of these films, because each is a great entry into the genre, making 2026 a phenomenal year.
